New York & Company Springs to Life

This week I've decided to take a look at fabulous florals.  Daisy, sunflower, rose and tulip prints are perfect for brightening up your look for Spring/Summer.  Flirty floral prints are popping up in the most surprising shapes and designs.  Be bold with an all over floral patterned dress or add subtle floral accents with a printed top or bottom.  No matter which style you embrace you'll be sure to be delightful in your florals.

New York & and Company blooms with floral print apparel.  The looks are light and lively without looking like you raided your Grandmother's closet.  Fabrics that lay lovingly on your skin compliment the lines and cuts of the many lovely creations.

New York & Company has a terrific sale going on right now.  Why not take advantage and snap up a few bright and airy florals for the upcoming warmer seasons.

Will you wear florals as the weather heats up?  How will you pair them up?

Losing Muscle, Not Fat...

It's been 4 weeks of low to no carbs and sugars, low fat, and No alcohol.  Has it been difficult? A bit, but not as bad as I thought it would be.  The goal of this endeavor was to force my body into ketosis, where the body draws on fat stores for fuel rather than glucose from carbs.

In theory ketosis sounds like a miracle.  Could it be so simple? Reducing fat stores by eating protein and no carbs?  Unfortunately, like most things in life, NO it's not that simple.

Interestingly enough after following this Very Strict eating plan I have lost 9 pounds of muscle and gained 1 pound of fat, using a Tanita Dr's scale.  The scale shows a loss of 8 pounds, but unfortunately it's mostly muscle which is not where I should have lost the weight.  To say I am disappointed is an understatement.  Please don't get me wrong, I did lose weight but not at all where I should have according to the statistics of this type of eating plan.

There are those that will say I must not have followed the diet correctly, but I can truthfully say I did NOT cheat ever during these 4 weeks.  I did complete 2 upper body strength training sessions with weights 2 times a week.  I'm not able to do any cardio due to an injury to my knee.

For today, Easter Sunday, I am eating and drinking whatever and whenever I want to.  I will hop back on the diet coaster tomorrow.  I will continue to follow the same eating plan, but I will be tweaking my food choices and adding in a larger variety of fruits and some whole grains.  I've been researching the possible causes of this muscle loss and haven't quite figured it out, but once I do I'll share.

Do you have any experience with ketosis?  Muscle loss on a diet?

Does Your Skin Need Oxygenating Products to Breathe?

Have you noticed the new oxygenating skin care products that are surfacing?  I received 2 products from 2 different companies touting the benefits of oxygenation.  I wondered about this.  Does my skin need more oxygen?  Researching the claims was difficult.  After many dead ends I found a wonderful blog article by Hanah Tetro that discusses both the pros and cons of oxygenating skin care products.  Here are a few things that I learned.

  1. Oxygen is known to give skin brightness and clarity.
  2. Oxygen products work to calm the skin, reduce inflammation and tone blood vessels.
  3. Oxygen increases circulation and kills bacteria which keeps breakouts away.
  4. Skin that lacks proper oxygen flow looks dull and sallow.  Oxygen makes the skin look vibrant and healthy.

  1. The skin is not an oxygen-using tissue, in fact it prefers to metabolize without oxygen.  Plus skin cannot absorb it.
  2. Oxygen is a non-active ingredient.
  3. Oxygen is a gas and cannot be incorporated as a stand-alone ingredient.  There is no proof that it can stay in any product.
  4. It's not clear that if oxygen could be added to a product it would improve the skin's appearance.

(Malin + Goetz) detox face mask

Winner of Allure Magazine's Editor's Choice Best of Beauty Awards (2008)
An easy 5-minute foaming gel mask: Innovative, oxygenating cleansing agents replace harsh detergents and drying clays to deep-pore-cleanse, lifting dirt, oil and make-up away from the skin without irritation, while creating a physical barrier to seal hydration. Complex amino acids and natural almond extract gently and effectively purify, clarify, balance and soothe. Stable Vitamin C, antioxidants Vitamin E and Soy Protein help firm and address concerns for aging while instantly brightening complexion.

While I like the written benefits of this mask, I fail to notice any remarkable difference to my skin after using 2 times a week for several weeks.  Waiting for the mask to oxygenate is interesting, the mask comes alive with bubbles.  I'll continue using this mask since the ingredient list is a complex mix of extracts and antioxidants which are beneficial to ageing skin.

Naobay Oxygenating Cream Moisturizer

Oxygenating Cream moisturizes, protects and softens: this universal cream meets, in a single product, the essential needs of hydration for all skin types.
Its special composition based on high-quality plant extracts and organic vegetable oils, such as Rosehip oil* and Sweet Almond oil*, helps ideally balance the skin’s hydrolipidic film.
Rapidly absorbed after application, it provides a makeup base for prolonged wear.

As it states this moisturizer sinks into my skin without leaving any greasiness behind.  It is light enough not to cause any breakouts or blemishes, yet offers well-balanced hydration to my combination skin.

I agree that both products offer skin benefits, but do I believe that my skin is being oxygenated by using them.  I have to say I don't.  Companies creating products based on simple effectiveness rather than hype suit me better.  I'm not a chemist so maybe there is more to it than I am able to see.  For now, just call it what it is, but where would the fun be in that?

Are Carbs the Enemy?

There is evidence that that consuming a diet high in refined carbohydrates can increase a person's risk of heart disease.

"The high levels of sugar raise insulin levels and after a few hours cause blood sugar to crash, which can make many people crave more processed carbs," says David Ludwig, MD, PhD, director or the New Balance Foundation Obesity Prevention Center at Boston's Children's Hospital.  "The vicious cycle, over time, increases the risk of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes." *

By focusing on replacing refined starches with vegetables, fruits, and beans you can make a healthy difference for your heart.

On my journey to a healthy lifestyle, I have read many books on weight loss.  The one common thread is the reduction or, even more drastically, the elimination of all starchy, sugary carbs.  I am an admitted carb addict who on my hunt for the perfect eating plan has neglected to follow this simple rule.  The problem for me with carbs is once I start eating them, even good for me carbs, I cannot seem to stop.

So for the next 3 weeks, until Easter, I am going virtually carb free.  This means avoiding All types of sugar and simple carbohydrates, potatoes, rice, wheat, flour and corn.  I will be eating certain veggies, but no grains or fruits.  This is Phase 1.

My eating plan consists of lean protein, very low carb and no sugar veggies, some dairy, nuts, and limited condiments.  Yes, it is Very restrictive! Yes, it is what I need to kick my metabolism and fat burning in gear!

This plan is different from any other plan I have ever tried.  It is medically supervised with weekly weigh-ins (on Wednesdays) and food diary review.  It is a disciplined plan that ensures that I will lose weight while getting rid of my pesky cravings.

Scientific fact:  If you do not eat any carbohydrates or sugar at all, in 4 days you will be free from craving them.  But for 4 days you must avoid All sugar and carbs.

Can I do it?  Will I fight?  I have to make a choice...and I choose to lose weight to make a healthier person.  Of course looking better is a wonderful motivator too!

As I go through the different Phases of this plan on into Maintenance I will be adding in new foods.  For now, for 3 weeks, this is my eating plan.

Light daily exercise, such as walking for 30 minutes each day are encouraged.  I will also be adding 2 strength training days.

I know some of you out there will think this eating plan is a bit of deprivation, but so far it is working for me.

What do you think?  Would you be willing to give up carbs?  Or are you already following a similar plan?
